Hancock promises £40 million to improve computer login times
The government has announced that it will provide £40 million to the NHS to “transform slow login times.” A press release on the gov.uk site says this will “support projects similar to” a single sign-on project at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool, which “reduced the time spent logging into multiple computer systems from 1 minute 45 seconds to 10 seconds.” However, it also says the project will focus on three areas: working with IT system suppliers to standardise logins and provide alternatives to passwords; making sure trusts update their processes; and integrating systems so staff can more easily access the IT they need.

Health news: Simon Stevens to receive knighthood; NHS targets slip again; Devon trusts explore joint working options
Simon Stevens, the chief executive of NHS England and the ‘leader’ of NHS Improvement, is to be knighted. The Health Service Journal (£) reported the news after the publication of the 2020 new year’s honour’s list, to a mixed reaction from its readers. Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, which already share board directors, are exploring options to address joint challenges, HSJ has reported. Royal Devon and Exeter is due to deploy Epic.

Ambulance chief executives call for co-ordinated 111 and 999 commissioning
The Association of Ambulance Chief Executives is calling for a joined-up approach to the commissioning of 999 and NHS 111 services, the Health Service Journal (£) reported. At the moment, 999 services tend to be commissioned across a bigger footprint than 111 services, which the AACE argues leads to fragmentation and inefficiency. It wants regional specifications for both 999 and 111 services, a halt to 111 contracts until these are in place, and a shift to five-year contracts to encourage investment in new digital triage and advice services. It also wants regional oversight and monitoring of performance.

Bolton live with Allscripts Sunrise
Bolton NHS Foundation Trust went live in October with the Allscripts Sunrise electronic patient record in one of the biggest initial deployments of the system to be delivered in the UK, digitalhealth.net reported. The trust has retained its DXC Technology patient administration system and used a ‘clinical wrap’ to deploy Sunrise, which is being used for e-prescribing and order communications in its A&E department, and for e-prescribing, order communications, clinical documentation and mobile working across its wards. It has also gone live with a ‘first of type’ interface between the EPR and its EMIS Health pharmacy system and with elements of Allscripts’ electronic document management solution.
